We can't trust the government with our money...

But we can trust them with our lives, safety, security, and privacy? This glaring contradiction is something that has always bothered me when libertarian anti-tax, anti-government conservatives are willing to give the government almost unlimited power to spy on and torture its own citizens. Even if these measures are potentially useful (which I doubt) why should we simply trust our government to employ them responsibly without any oversight?
